Of all the languages spoken in France, Breton may be one of the most fascinating. Breton is a regional language spoken in the Brittany region of France, known for its Neolithic menhirs and dolmens, ancient architectural and cultural heritage. It is a ‘Brythonic Language’ brought from Great Britain to ‘Armorica’, during the early middle ages. It was the language of the upper classes in the 12th century until it became the language of the lower classes when nobility changed to follow French. It has similarities to Cornish and Welsh but has its own propositions and grammar rules.
Did you know that Breton is an endangered language? The last survey was done in 2007; results came in that only 206,000 people still use the Breton language to communicate!
