Why take our Fijian Vocabulary Quiz?

Fijian (Na Vosa Vakaviti) is an Austronesian language of the Malayo-Polynesian family spoken in Fiji. The early missionaries who came to Fiji selected the Bau dialect, or Bauanas, as the standard dialect for printing and communication, which soon became the standard of communication among the indigenous iTaukei. Bauan was then adopted by the British administration for communication with the iTaukei, which over time evolved into what is known today as Standard Fijian, including many English, Hindi, and other Fijian dialectal contributions.

Did you know?
Did you know that the Fijian language has an incredible feature that sets it apart from other languages? The language boasts not one, not two, but three different levels of politeness, each with its own set of rules and customs!
For informal situations, Fijians use the phrase “noqu sega,” while “noqu” is used for more formal occasions. However, for highly ceremonial or esteemed events, the phrase “noqu tuvatuva” is used to convey the highest level of respect and reverence.
It’s fascinating to think about how much consideration and thought goes into the language and culture of Fiji and how deeply rooted respect and honor are in the Fijian way of life. This unique feature of the Fijian language is just one of the many reasons why it’s worth exploring and appreciating the diversity of languages and cultures around the world.
