Jèrriais is the traditional language of Jersey, closely related to French, and an important part of Jersey’s heritage. For many centuries, the official written language of Jersey was standard French, while the people spoke Jèrriais, until English became the lingua franca of education in 1912.
Although part of the British Isles, Jersey is not part of the U.K. or Great Britain; it is a British Crown Dependency, situated off the coast of Normandy. It’s important to get that straight before you go!
Because of its connection to French, it is sometimes known as Jersey French or Jersey Norman French. Just under 3000 people speak Jèrriais, and by learning this colorful and quirky language, you too can contribute to keeping it and the historical identity of Jersey alive. Like many of the smaller languages, it’s on its way back.
