About the language

Korean is the national language of both North and South Korea, and approximately 77 million people worldwide speak it. This language is considered a “language isolate” because it is not related to any other language, but it does share similarities with other languages in the region, such as Japanese and Mongolian, due to interactions and trade in the past.

In the 15th century, King Sejong the Great created Hangul, the Korean writing system. It was made so that the common people could learn it easily and use it. Hangul is a unique part of the language that makes it stand out from other alphabetic or character-based languages and is considered one of the most scientific and systematic writing systems in the world. Hangul is made up of 24 basic letters: 14 consonants and 10 vowels. The combination of these letters allows for the creation of syllables, which are the basic units of sound in Korean, and these syllables can be combined to form words and sentences. Throughout history, the Korean language has been a key aspect of preserving Korean culture and identity.

Korea has a long literary legacy, with classical Korean literature comprising a wide range of genres such as poetry, prose, and historical records. Sijo, or classical Korean poetry, depicts the beauty of nature, love, and intellectual thoughts. Renowned authors with international acclaim and recognition like Kim Sowol, Yi Sang, and Han Kang have made significant contributions to contemporary Korean literature.

In recent years, the Korean language has continued to play a vital role in connecting people on a global scale and shaping the nation’s future. Korean pop culture, known as Hallyu, has grown in popularity around the world. K-pop music, Korean dramas, and films have captured viewers all over the world, introducing millions to the Korean language and culture. This global phenomenon of Hallyu has captured the attention of people from all walks of life and resulted in a significant increase in Korean language learners and consumers of Korean content in various forms such as music, dramas, movies, and fashion.

Did you know?

Kimchi is sliced cabbage fermented with red chili sauce and anchovy paste. It is pungent, spicy, and sour. Koreans love it and eat it with every meal, usually on the side, though they also use it as an ingredient in countless other dishes.
Kimchi is symbolic of Korean culture; it’s strong, distinctive, and defiant. Just like the language.
